Coachella Valley Preserve
Located just 10 miles outside of Palm Springs is perhaps one of the most intriguing features of the desert, the Coachella Valley Preserve. Laying in the mesas of the Indio Hills the 17,000 acre site is home to the very rare Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard. The preserve is also home to the Thousand Palm Oasis which is fed by water from the San Andreas Fault. For those looking to embark on a rugged adventure, San Andreas Fault jeep tours are a remarkable way to explore the desert. For those that are looking to get a little exploring or exercise in, the preserve also has a variety of hiking trails.
The Pushawalla Palms trail is considered to be the hardest of the trails. The trail is a six mile hike and runs from the desert floor and ends near the Pushwalla Palms oasis. The Hidden Palm trail measures about 3-5 miles depending on which route you decide to take. You really can't make a bad choice with any of the Hidden Palms trails as each one boasts breathtaking views of the oasis and valley. The Willis Palm trail is considered to be the easiest of the trio, but still measures out between 4-5 miles. One thing is for sure, no matter which trail you decide to take, bring lots of water and shade as the desert can get very warm.
Before heading out for you exploration you may want to stop in at the visitor's center where you can get guide for the preserve as well as other information when it comes to the plant and wildlife as well as geology of the site. The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset, but officials ask that visitors plan their day so that they are out of the parking lot by sundown.
For those that are looking for an educational day out in the sun, then the Coachella Valley Preserve is just what you have been looking for.
