Moorten Botanical Gardens and Cactarium
1701 South Palm Canyon Drive
Palm Springs, CA 92264
With its 3,000 desert cacti and other various plantlife, the Moorten Botanical Gardens and Cactarium has become one of the top Palm Springs attractions.
Plants have been collected from various areas such as Baja California, Arizona, Mojave Desert, South Africa and the Sonora Desert. Outdoor plant life includes species such as agaves, cardon and boojum trees, thorned Caesalpina, a Pachypodium that stands two stories tall, and aloes that come from southern Africa and Madagascar.
The Cactarium greenhouse is home to a variety of cacti and other succulents. Feel free to check out the caudiciform species and its thickened root crowns as well as Aztecia, Alstromeria, Asclepiads and two Welwitzia mirabells that come from the Namibian deserts.
When you make your visit to the Moorten Botanical Gardens, you can be sure that you are visiting one of the most well respected attractions in Palm Springs. Slim and Patricia Moorten have gained valuable experience in the plant industry as they have installed landscapes for Frank Sinatra as well as working with Walt Disney at the Palm Springs Smoke Tree Ranch. The Moorten's were also an integral part in designing the western theme of Frontierland. The Moorten's have also made the rounds all the way around the world as they have taken trips to Baja and as far south as Guatemala to collect plants.
Today Clark Moorten is the man in charge of the gardens and is seen as an expert on succulents. He also works on packaging the plants for retail sale.
For those that have a little bit of a green thumb, the Moorten Botanical Gardens and Cactarium is a must see.
