With its 83,000 square feet of space and standing four levels high, the Palm Springs Desert Museum is one of the most amazing sights in Palm Springs.
The museum is a place where aspects of desert life, politics, natural history and Hollywood glitz all come together to help educate visitors about the area. The museum has a several exhibits that are permanently on display. The Western and Native American art displays Cahuilla baskets and other artifacts that are designed to reflect the culture. The George Montgomery collection comes complete with photographs and letters from President Reagan. Other permanent fixtures include the William Holden collection, a The Mesoamerican art. The exhibits also include a graphic arts gallery, a natural sciences gallery and a gallery for special exhibits. Just one word of advice for those visiting the natural history wing, flash photography is prohibited so taking photos might be a little bit of a tricky deal.
Other facilities at the museum includes the Sinatra Sculpture Court, lecture hall, classrooms designed for the natural sciences, two sculpture gardens, the Museum store and the Annenberg Theater.
For those looking to get the most out of their museum going experience, you may want to take part in some of the year round programs. The museum offers hikes, kid's workshops, concerts and films, a docent council and a community outreach program.
