Windmill Tours
1-10 & Indian Avenue on the North Frontage Road
Palm Springs, CA
More and more time is being devoted to alternative energy sources. Visitors to the Palm Springs area can now get an up close and personal look at one of the leaders in the industry as they take a tour of a working wind farm.
Visitors to the farm are in for a treat as it is the only working wind farm in the world. The 3,100 windmills are able to generate enough energy to power the city of Palm Springs as well as some of the surrounding areas. Visitors to the farm can check out many different styles and types of the windmills. The largest windmills are able to produce enough energy to power about 2,000 houses and is comparable to the size of a middle of the road nuclear reactor.
The Palm Springs area proves to be an ideal location for the windmill farm as the desert winds often blow hard enough to power the windmills 300 days a year. Due to the fact that the wind usually blow west to east in the morning and east to east in the afternoon, half the windmills are facing one way while the other half are facing the other. Each windmill is placed 700 feet apart which allows for optimal wind usage. Once wind passes though the blades of one windmill it becomes "dirty" and it takes the wind 700 feet before it can be used again by the next windmill.
For those that are looking to learn more about a renewable energy source that is really starting to be developed, the Windmill tours are a must see.
